ISAB Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Iowa Stocks & Bonds Group?

The Iowa Stocks and Bonds group is an Iowa based organization founded to serve as an educational and support group for Midwestern adults interested in alternative sexual lifestyles. We believe we are the first statewide D/s (Dominance and submission) and BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Sadism and Masochism) organization in Iowa.

We provide a public forum where members can sort out and discuss the issues facing BDSMers today in an open, supportive atmosphere. We do this through our listserve and by promoting local social get-togethers.

We also serve as a means for members to establish personal contact and get to know each other, to lose that sense of being the "only one in the state". We have established, and hope to grow and maintain, a sense of community for BDSM lifestylers and participants in Iowa and the surrounding states.

 What is a ListServe?

A listserve is like a chat room, but done with e-mail. People communicate by posting messages to the listserve. Every message posted to the list is then sent to everyone else on the list. We currently have about 140 members on our listserve. The recipients may choose to respond (continuing the thread), or lurk (not posting at all), or starting a new thread.

Who can join the ListServe?

Anyone 21 or over can join the listserve.

What is discussed on the Iowa Stocks & Bonds ListServe?

The topics available for discussion are entirely up to the membership.   Anyone can  talk about anything.  We have very few rules, and sometimes the discussions become quite explicit.  However, respect for each other is expected and flaming is not allowed.

If explicit discussion of sexual activities and fetishes offends you, please do not subscribe.

How do I subscribe?

Because of the age restrictions, the procedure for subscribing to the listserve is a two part process, but is not too complicated.   First, simply send us a message with the word SUBSCRIBE in the subject line.   By return e-mail, you will receive information and a "Certification Form" to fill out. Return the filled out form to us, and you are a member! (see the ListServe page for complete instructions.)

Where are the members from?

Most of our members are from Iowa or the surrounding states, but we do have expatriates from as far away as California and Washington DC. We have fairly large enclaves in the Quad Cities, The Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area, and Des Moines area, but we have members from every part of the state.

What is #BDSM_Iowa on Dalnet?

The Iowa Stocks & Bonds Group does not own a channel on IRC, but we encourage the use of one that is registered to an ISAB member.  The channel is active every night. This allows members, and others (the channel is open to anyone over 21) to discuss relevant lifestyle issues in RT (real time), but we also get to "meet" socially and we have a lot of fun. Please feel free to join us when you can, and view the #BDSM_Iowa page on this site for more info.

What is a Munch and what happens there?

A "Munch" is a general meeting of a BDSM organization.  They usually include food, discussion, demonstrations, games, and socializing.  Munches are important to the group because besides the social context, they are where we conduct business, decide the future of the group, and give educational demonstrations.   Munches are also an opportunity to meet the people you talk with online or on the ListServe.

Does ISAB Sponsor Any Munches?

ISAB does not sponsor any munch in particular. It serves as a facilitator to local social get-togethers. For example, there is a weekly meeting called GLD's in Iowa City, and a bi-weekly munch for DMAD in Des Moines that gets announced on the ISAB calendar. Details for these and other local meetings are also posted on the ListServe.

How can I learn more?

Our Resources page is a suggested list of information on many aspects of BDSM. Learn before you do!  Do you need a kink-aware doctor, lawyer or other professional, a support group, or a pair of 5" pumps in a size 13EEE to go with the new maid's outfit? How about vacations, toy stores, magazines, equestrian shops, etc.. It's all here. Check it out!

How do I find out what's going on?

Our Calendar page has a lot of information on events and happenings in the BDSM Communities of the Midwest, including munches, parties, conventions, meetings, and other activities. We also include selected events from across the country.
