CURRENT PROJECTS AND DEVELOPMENTS

Linux From Scratch! -- That's right, I'm building my own Linux distribution. I equate the project with how some guys will spend months or even years building a car piece by piece from the wheels up, or an exact miniature replica of a battlefield, etc. I'm building a Linux distro from the kernel up. It's going to take a long time and a LOT of work, but man will it be something to be proud of!

CIW Certified Master Web Designer --
I acquired my CIW Master Web Designer early 2002! I guess that should look somewhat impressive on a résumé. Especially since my formal education is in the form of Theatre (Directing) and English BA's. Which I'm not using. Unless you count the fact I can uselessly discuss the history of the English language with dramatic flair. =) But so far that's not been very useful in the job market.

Gaming Stuff
• I'm helping design a new web site for the Springfield Area Gaming Association (SAGA). I designed the old one too, but it's time for a make-over.

• Hard at work learning the Fading Suns RPG system. Hope to start a home campaign soon.

• I've applied to attend GenCon as a rep for AEG games. I won't find out until May if I make it.

• Just started playing the PC game Battlefield:1942 again, and would play it every waking hour if I could. =)

The ultimate in self-grandizing propaganda!
The "personal web page."

I've had a few different versions over the past couple of years. "Liam's Home" was my 1st version, and to be honest I still like it. Simple and clean. I hate those websites where people put pages of stuff scrolling down one long page cluttered with animated gif's and cutsey graphics. But at the same time, I want to show a little more visual creativity in my page. So, hope you like this version.
Back to the topic....

Me name is Liam, and I fancy meself something of a web designer. I guess since I'm being paid by Kinetics to develop Web sites, it's more than just a hobby now.

I'm a husband and a father, and in addition to doing LAN Admin and Web Development work, I also write fiction (fantasy, sci-fi, gothic horror,) but have yet to submit anything for publishing. Don't ask me why that it; perhaps it has to do with fear or rejection. "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." =Þ

I currently live in Missouri, but was mostly raised in Colorado, and if I don't go back there at least to visit soon, I'm going to go nucking futz! When you're born and raised with REAL mountains in your view and heart, they will always pull on you. I lived for a brief instance in Washington (back when St. Helen's blew, actually,) and Iowa for a couple of years. Great state! Iowa City and Des Moines are great towns! But the land itself has no...spirit. Even the Ozarks have more spirit in the land than Iowa. It's hard to describe. But I do miss the political and intellectual openness and acceptance of IA/MN, not to mention the copious amount of NPR stations! =)

Back to what I do, it's VERY different than what I'm educated in. I have BA's in Theatre (focus in directing) and English. Haven't done a thing with them. Meant to go to grad school, in fact was briefly enrolled at U of I, was even set to teach an Acting I class, but oh well. Life happens. So now designing web pages and coding in PHP and ASP.Net and toying with Linux servers. Funny how things work out. But it's OK. I'm certainly interested, and not too bad in those areas. Especially for being mainly self-taught. Actually, I've taken a couple of MCSE classes in TCP/IP and WinNT Administration, but I taught myself HTML and what I know of Javascript, ASP, and PHP from looking at sourcecode and the odd book or web site. At one time I thought this area of study/employment was a good idea as it's well paying...but well, people who can whip up web pages with FrontPage (shudder) or Dreamweaver is becoming like locust. The fact I can make a site using Notepad is really no longer that impressive.

If I stay in the tech field, my goal is to eventually run my own ISP built with me own widdle hands. I'm getting pretty good with Linux (it's free!) as well as IIS. 1st step is to design pages, then host pages on my own servers, then expand to allow net access, then house my own servers and routers etc, then get bought out by Earthlink.... *eg*

I still fantasize about having a career writing, I still try to find time in my odd free hour a week to write for fun. Who knows.

As for hobbies, well, yeah, Linux and web development is way up there. But I'm also a fanatic about role-playing gaming. You know, Dungeons&Dragons and those other evil tools of Satan. (People don't still believe that, do they? That was a pretty big issue back when I was playing as a kid, 8 to 12 or 13 years old.) Now I'm actually a member of a local gaming group, SAGA, and occasionally finagle a couple of hours a week or so to actually play with other people now! Before graduating undergrad, I played tons of D&D, Shadowrun, Twilight2000, Top Secret, etc. The last 6 years since graduating I haven't played a whit. Now, with this group, it's a little gaming heaven! Anyway, enough of geekdom.

That's a general overview. More than any anonymous person would ever really want to know. But if you DO want to know more, why? I mean, check out my Thoughts page for more details about my philosophies and opinions and beliefs.

If you want to discuss anything from the above, feel free to send a message. I'll answer anything that's not an overt flame. (And if you have nothing better to do but flame someone you don't know based on some superficial surface info on them, shame on you. Get a hobby. May I suggest Linux administration....)
