Unreal: Tournament

The best 1st person shooter, bar none. Even moderate computer systems can run this game with a decent frame rate AND still have great colors, textures, and detail levels. The maps are interesting and visually remarkable. No all brown/green palates of the Quake games--UT has the entire color spectrum. The missions, as such, are pretty basic. Kill everyone as quickly and often, help your team kill everyone on the other team quickly and often, capture the other team's flag while trying to kill enemy after your flag quickly and often. There's next to nothing in the way of traps (unless you count things like narrow walkways over bottomless space and such.) Your objective is pretty much always centered around your opponent and killing. Which makes it the ultimate in what it was meant for, network gaming. And it certainly needs a good connection to do so. You're often having to download unique maps or player skins, so the faster the connection the faster you can join the fragging. The range of weapons is fantastic. From your basic melee power-hammer, to plasma guns and multiple rocket launchers. The best feature is that each weapon has dual action. For example the rocket launcher will fie rockets or pipe bombs, and will fire more at one time the longer you hold the button down. But the killer weapon is the BFG remote guided missile. Once you launch it your PointOfView becomes that of the rocket as you guide it with 360 range of movement where you want it.
THIS is the network playable shooter you must have.
