Hypocrisy: Karma’s a Bi**h

Last week I posted: Wow. A Must-See for Everyone!

I linked to the Richard Dawkins’ documentary regarding “The God Delusion,” and he interviewed mega-church televangelist and buddy to the Bruce Chapman, head of the very ironically named The Discovery Institute (a thinly veiled political strong-arm organization for anti-science,) and James Dobson of the “our business is in your bedroom” Focus on the Family, Ted Haggard.

He was extremely arrogant and self-righteous. Very. And after his twisted reasoning is questioned, he becomes surly and pissy and throws Richard Dawkin’s off his compound, er, property. Well, here’s an interesting revelation:

So, why is the fall of someone like that make me so gleeful? Isn’t that pretty mean? Yeah, well, it’s cosmic justice against people who set themselves up as a bastion of uber-morality. And that makes me happy.

If he’s gay, or even bi, fine. There’s nothing wrong with that. Prostitution, eh, no biggie. (Personally, drugs are NOT fine, but, people who do use them, their business.) But when you create this agenda of anti-gay, gay-bashing, homophobia, and spend you time and money (and other peoples’ money) on anti-gay campaigns with the message that being gay is evil and wrong and terrible, and it’s revealed you have gay sex…I revel in the hypocrisy.

    I don’t revel in it. I think it is incredibly sad to think of all the lives this man has ruined with his vitriol. It would be great if the revelation that their pastor is gay convinced his followers that there’s nothing wrong with being gay. Then a great healing could come about. But the reality is that the followers will simply chalk it up to Satan, and the powers of homosexuality must be even greater than imagined if someone as holy as Pastor Ted can fall victim. That, to me, is incredibly sad.

    No, you’re right, it is sad when you think about all the people who follow this man’s preaching and follow him like sheep to be fleeced.
    I feel bad, to a degree, for those people…but only to a limit. Every individual with an IQ higher than 85 have a responsibility to be critical thinkers. To use reason when deciding what is right and wrong, and not the force of authority. If they choose to give up reason for being a sheep, they are culpable for being fooled and tricked and lied to.
    I hope that the self-destruction of the leaders of the Moral Majority plants the seeds of doubt and questioning in many people. Unfortunately, too many people have drank the kool-aid and have given their mind over to the cult of personality based on the cult of Jesus.
    Take a look at the videos linked in my post “Wow. A Must-See for Everyone!.” and you can see Haggard’s followers. See Haggard and his charismatic preaching. See how so many of these people are lost causes. It is indeed very sad.
