Copies Don’t Mean Credibility

Posted by CelticBear on November 16th, 2006

Debunking Christianity has an interesting post today by Zac Taylor, titled:

What if the Bible was Perfectly Copied for the last 2000 Years?

In it he briefly discusses why it doesn’t matter if the entire line of Biblical manuscripts from now on back 2000 years is accurate to the original writing, because:

The bottom line is that these apologists and evangelists are confusing the reliability of the TEXT with the reliability of the MESSAGE. That, I think is a crucial distinction that needs to be made.

I agree 100%. Coming from a large circle of apologists, however, I know what their argument will be: Why would someone devote his entire life to perfectly copying every jot and tittle of a story that wasn’t true? This argument, of course, has many problems. One, believing it to be true doesn’t make it true. Two, many, many fictional stories have been copied for eons because people simply love the story. Etc…

But Mr. Taylor has hit the nail on the head. Fundamentalists believe the text and the message are one and the same.
