White House spokesman Tony Snow recently claimed Bill Clinton had a lot of chutzpah (the ability to kill your parents and then beg forgiveness from the court because you’re an orphan) for criticizing King George about him clemency of convicted perjurer and CIA agent exposer “Scooter” Libby. The point being Clinton had also granted clemency to quite a few people in his time.
Of course, the difference being Clinton’s clemencies were used liberally to various people, while King George has reserved his for close friends and associates. Clinton clemenced (?) sentences after prison time was already being served, often as much as a year of time served, while King George clemenced his friend “Scooter” before the ink on the conviction had even dried.
That being said, here’s where the hypocrisy gets interesting: Remember way back in 2004 when King George first said he’d fire anyone in his administration who is found to be involved in outing CIA Agent Plame? Back before the evidence was pointing toward the White House’s involvement, and evidence at Libby’s court proceedings showed Cheney was involved, and implicated King George was also involved…and here not only are Cheney and George still in office, no one’s been fired and the one convicted person gets no jail time.
Good ole Values President, King George and his tough on crime stance!
